Quantitative Spektralanalyse des B2-Riesensterns Gamma Orionis

No. 44
Budapest, 1959

Abstract

The atmosphere of the B2 giant star, gamma Ori, has been investigated. It occupies a place in the H-R diagram that lies close to the compact group of beta CMa stars (Fig 6), but its radial velocity being constant the star does not belong to this group of variables. Equivalent widths have been measured on 5 spectrograms (Table 1-2) taken by Kopilov at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory with a dispersion of 23,4 A/mm at H gamma. Analysing the material by the curve-of-growth procedure the mean excitation temperature, electron pressure, turbulence velocity, surface gravity and the relative proportions of various light elements are determined. The results are tabulated in Table 7 and 9, and compared to beta CMa stars in order to find out differences in the chemical composition not depending on luminosity or spectral type (Table 10, Fig. 5 and 7). The results indicate a higher H/He and H/O ratio for beta CMa stars than in the normal early-type B stars like gamma Ori.
